Bill Steiner formed Playce to guide communities in developing vibrant, fun, engaging,
public places. Such places create full, rich lives for communities and the
people in them. Playce also helps individuals gain balance giving them time to
enjoy thriving public places. Since 1974 Bill has been working with communities nationally and internationally. He has a BA in History and MA in Historic Preservation. Before creating Playce Bill: • Served for five years as Executive Director of Community Builders, a nonprofit providing planning, design, and community revitalization assistance to South Carolina communities. • Directed downtown revitalization programs in Knoxville, Tennessee, and for the states of Kentucky and South Carolina - a total of 17 years. • Directed a housing rehab program in Chicago. • Ran a statewide revolving fund to save endangered historic properties in North Carolina. • Served as Assistant Director of the Southern Regional Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation located in Charleston, SC. To assist communities Bill employs "civic design" - the conscious blending of physical design, the arrangement of uses, culture, policy, and programing. It results in rich, vibrant, interactive people places. Born overseas and with extensive international experience, Bill appreciates how much we can learn from other cultures. This, combined with his work in American communities, led to learning trips in Italy, begun in 2003. In a complex world, Bill is a generalist, using big picture skills and sensibilities to knit the seemingly unrelated into a comprehensible whole. He is published in the Christian Science Monitor and Small Town magazine, and has worked internationally with Scotland, China, Denmark, and Italy. It is in helping communities and individuals achieve their full potential that Bill finds great joy. |
